Strategic Situation

History and Strategic Situation

An Island in the Pocket

Humanity's home system, Sol, was once at the center of a vast unexplored region of stars stretching between the inner Imperial core and the outer band of interlinked and developed colonies. The sector, claimed by the Imperium centuries before, lay mostly underdeveloped and uncharted beyond simple long range observations and wildcat settlers with dubious colonial claims. Too few systems promised anything beyond metallic ores and even fewer hinted to the possibility of a world that could be made to support Imperial standard life let alone host a native biosphere. This left few interested parties in developing the region until roughly the latter half of the nineteenth century of the human calendar.

By this time for the Imperium the region represented a barrier to most space traffic moving from the core to the outer colonial halo. Now known as the Miran Expanse, the only real way to cross it was via long range carrier vessels or dedicated long range freighters. All due to lack of development and a lack of fueling stations and a Noble House that had little interest in doing so. This changed with an edict from the Empress and the opening of a vast sum of funds to bridge the gap and establish a trade corridor.

Civilization This Way Comes

An older Noble House, House Shirus, had held the domain as part of a larger holding of outer colonial systems for nearly two centuries. Controlling two key port systems, Divalious and Halan, on either side of the Miran Expanse, a sub family had run a business of ferrying shorter range vessels on larger carriers for nearly two generations. While normally the wants and needs of the Imperial Navy would have required the establishment of fueling stations, the location of the territory on the far side of empire and the simple financial reality of being a near backwater had left the adhoc system in place. Loans being beyond the means of the House and the area being a fairly low priority for the Imperium in general. The edict from the Empress changed this, however for House Shirus their generational 'kicking the can down the road' would haunt them as neighboring Houses made claims to the region. Citing their lack of ability to carry out the project, some of the claims inflated, some of them actual, effectively forcing the House to sell their controlling portion of shares in the project.

Three major interests had forced their way into the project; the Mavra'petra Cartel, a collection of noble houses and large scale commercial interests that had come together to form a common business interest with operations throughout the empire. House M'Pravasi which held systems and industrial projects on both sides of the expanse and who's movers and shakers had little interest in allowing the short comings of House Shirus to continue.

Imperial Domain and a Small Blue Marble

With an edict from the Empress herself various small colonies (mostly of the indie Rakiri sort) and mining operations are forced to provide a springboard for pushing into and building a pathway across the expanse.

Liberating Humanity From Itself

The invasion is carried out after a two hour time window demanding immediately and unconditional surrender for the totality of the human species. Imperial planners are more than aware that humankind is a divided species and that such a consensus could not be reached within such a short time frame. This allowed them to simply overpower and take direct control of human affairs without the need for negotiations and their associated compromises.

Due to poor intelligence, rushed planning, or simply the desire for glory over three hundred million human beings die in the first few days of the attack. Another seven hundred million will perish from invasion related violence, resistance, on going orbital strikes on significant locations of military remnants, and the massive widespread disruption of human civilization and society. Data pertaining to this death toll is rapidly classified as a state secret and hidden from Imperial society and the galaxy as a whole, the deaths of 1/8th of a species is feared by invasion planners as a potential trigger for a great galactic war after the Imperium's near total destruction of the Ulnus species.

These Are Not Rakiri

Humanity is rapidly found to not fit in the typical boxes for assimilation into the empire, even with suggestions from collaborators the initial years of occupation are messy to say the least. Backroom dealings and activities that would get entities in the Imperium censured or dismantled occur simply due to the lack of oversight. This greatly fuels the on going animosity between the species.

An 'Ungrateful' Humanity

On going efforts by various governesses within their dictated holdings on earth continue to anger their human populations, this paired with the general push for Imperial norms. Norms that run directly up against a species that has, to a person, lost someone to their 'liberation'.

A Bloody Decade and Now A Crossroads

Those who had opted for resistance had enjoyed some success during the 2020s, humanity and its general patterns of behavior were at best a frustration and at worst a trigger for reprisal and harsh measures by the occupation.

Between the dates of March 15th 2019 AD and the 14th of January 2037 ADNE Earth, humanity's homeworld, had found itself under occupation after a swift and brutal invasion. For the Imperium, the attack and subsequent long term operations to gradually assimilate humanity into their galactic fold had been, by most accounts, a modest to large scale failure. While a large number of the human species had taken to the wonders the Imperium offered, the invasion and subsequent acts had created more anger than appreciation. While few knew the whole picture, more than enough personal tragedy both on March 15th and in the following months had poisoned the hearts of many against any real cooperation with humanity's self proclaimed benefactors.

Most investigations, carried out via information warfare dives into Imperial archives, have yielded that it was mostly thought that a fast and nasty invasion and rapid takeover was the easiest option for the nobility of the Imperium. No long negotiations with countless small bands of, in their eyes a primitive humanity, just a fast military victory and a new layer of governance with themselves at it's head. Earth, with its industrial state and large population, was a massive opportunity for unlanded nobility throughout the Imperium due to both Earth, the various gas giants of the solar system, and its key positioning. The planet's central location within what was thought to be a vast gulf of worthless systems between the core and the outer halo of inhabited systems simply offered too great a temptation for most.

  • Sol and it's on going human insurgency became a sideshow to Imperial planners starting on 30 JAN 2034 ADNE due to the beginning of the First Great Galactic War
  • Partially liberated from total Imperial control by Operation ADVENT CROWN in 2037 ADNE.
  • Starting in 2042 ADNE the Cascadians begin a voluntary relocation program for any Earth born wishing to start again offworld. This is the second phase in a long term plan to ensure a free human population beyond the reach of the Imperium, the first having been the establishment of colony sites and large scale construction of their infrastructure needs. By 2048 nearly fifty million a year are making the one-way trip through the KYLEV-MULDOON translight gate in the Jovian planetary system.

Cascadian and Human United Front Aligned

Federated States of the Americas (FSA)

  • Composed of the 'free regions' of North and South America and additional areas of liberated East Asia.
  • Effectively a Federal Republic based on the same model as the United American Systems.

Eurozone Federal Entity (EFE)

Pan Eurasian Coalition (PEC)

Resurgent orthodox foundation slavic/central asian state, while investing in worlds beyond the Jovian gate it is still mostly focused on hardening and strengthening it's position on earth. Somewhat authoritarian but within the bounds set by the Cascadian authorities. They have stated their final goal is the liberation of Asia from Imperial occupation and from Imperial influence be it alien or human.

  • A vast and growing military industrial complex with virtually the entire society hardening around the idea of another 2019 attack being in the cards.
